Water is the best drug known to man. Unlike those known drugs that affect a particular part of the body, water affects all our organs and systems positively.

Water isn’t a drug, but it sure is important!

Yeah, it isn't

I just likened it to a drug based on its effectiveness

Such as laxatives which increases gut motility

And water also triggers gut motility although through a different mechanism of action

I've come across the advice to just follow your thirst before but when I track my fluid intake I never end up getting to the recommended intake level unless I make a very conscious effort to do so..... is that not the norm? I feel like I drink more water than others so I'm surprised if most people get enough without making a conscious effort....

Thanks for your question. When you say you don't get the recommended amount, how much fluid are you thinking is recommended? I'm asking because you are also getting fluid from fruits and vegetables and other fluids besides water.

Well I guess it depends how much we get from foods - I don't drink anything other than water though so I'm only accounting for that, and I try to get about 2 L

I think you're doing just fine with about 2 L! You are getting water from food, too. If your urine is pale yellow then you are hydrated.

Right, sorry, what I meant was that I try to get two liters on the days when I'm putting in a conscious effort but I find it quite difficult to do that so I know that on the days when I'm not paying attention I'm very likely not getting that much...

So I guess my point was just that I don't know if thirst is enough of an indicator for everyone

It may not be the best indicator. I think the color of your urine is one of the easiest ways to determine if you're getting enough fluid.
