Hi, I just found your newsletter and appreciate this post so much. I had a massive ischemic stroke at 52. I was fortunate that it was witnessed and medical intervention began within the hour resulting in recovery with no lasting effects. That was 3 1/2 years ago. I am so grateful.
Your mention of APOs makes me question the IVF treatments I had at age 39 and 41. The first caused severe hyper ovarian stimulation with complications (ovarian torsion and removal). I have always wondered if those events w/could impact my future health. I would be curious to know your thoughts on this. Thank you.
Hi, I'm sorry to hear about your stroke and glad to hear that you made a full recovery. (My dad had a stroke at age 56, so I get it.) You pose an interesting question. There's not a lot of research about it, but I did find this study, which is relatively recent: https://www.nhlbi.nih.gov/news/2023/infertility-treatment-linked-increased-risks-stroke
This study measured stroke risk for one year after delivery, so it doesn't answer the question of whether the risk persists, but it's an interesting finding anyway. I hope this is helpful.
You're welcome! I'm happy to provide the information. It's better to know all of your risk factors so that you can modify what you can. We can only do so much, right?

Thanks for this article. I had no idea that my preterm labor due to placental abruption increased my risk for stroke.
